Case Study: Role of Prenatal Yoga in Supporting a Healthy Pregnancy and Emotional Bonding
Introduction
A 32-year-old working woman, who was six months pregnant, joined my prenatal yoga classes in March 2025 with the aim of maintaining physical comfort, emotional balance, and overall well-being during pregnancy. She was referred by my gynaecologist. The sessions were carefully designed according to the changing needs of each phase of pregnancy.
She attended classes at my studio twice a week, and once a week I conducted a session at her home so that her husband could participate and support her during the practice. This approach not only helped the mother emotionally but also encouraged the father to build a connection with the unborn baby.
Phase 1: Foundation and Stability
During the initial stage, the focus was on relaxation, breath awareness, gentle mobility, and creating physical stability.
The sessions began with:
Gentle warm-up movements
Equal breathing and deep breathing techniques
Relaxation practices
Guided visualisation
The aim was to help her body adapt safely to movement while reducing stress from pregnancy and work-related fatigue.
Asanas for Stability
The following asanas were introduced gradually to improve balance, posture, and grounding:
Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
Vrikshasana (Tree Pose) with support
Marjariasana–Bitilasana (Cat-Cow Stretch)
Baddha Konasana (Butterfly Pose)
Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose)
Pelvic tilts
Gentle hip-opening movements
These practices helped improve body awareness, posture, circulation, and stability.
Phase 2: Building Strength
Once her body became comfortable and stable with regular practice, the sessions progressed toward building muscular strength, especially pelvic and lower body strength, which are important during pregnancy and childbirth.
Asanas for Strength
The following practices were included:
Deviasana (Goddess Pose)
Modified Malasana (Yogic Squat) with support
Virabhadrasana II (Warrior II)
Supported lunges
Setu Bandhasana (Supported Bridge Pose)
Pelvic floor awareness exercises
Gentle core strengthening practices
These asanas helped improve endurance, pelvic stability, leg strength, and confidence in movement.
Facial yoga techniques were also introduced to reduce facial tension, improve relaxation, and enhance overall emotional well-being.
Phase 3: Creating Space and Comfort in the Third Trimester
As the baby grew and gained weight during the third trimester, the focus shifted toward creating space within the body, improving breathing capacity, and relieving physical discomfort.
Asanas for Creating Space
The following asanas and movements were practiced:
Wide-legged Child’s Pose (supported)
Supported Wide-Angle Pose
Side stretches
Modified Parighasana (Gate Pose)
Butterfly Pose variations
Supported squatting practices
Shoulder and chest opening exercises
Restorative relaxation postures using cushions and bolsters
These practices helped relieve tightness in the lower back, hips, and chest while allowing more comfort as the baby grew.
Role of Breathwork, Visualisation, and Music
Breathing techniques remained an important part of every session. Over time, she became very comfortable with deep breathing and relaxation practices, which helped her remain calm and confident during the later stages of pregnancy.
Guided visualisation was introduced from the beginning and became a powerful tool for emotional connection. She regularly visualised herself delivering a healthy baby through a normal delivery.
Verbal communication with the baby in the womb was also encouraged, as babies begin developing hearing abilities around the fifth month of pregnancy. This practice strengthened the emotional bond between mother and baby.
Soft music was played during relaxation and visualisation sessions to create a calm and nurturing environment.
Outcome
In May 2025, she delivered a healthy baby girl. Throughout the pregnancy journey, she remained physically active, emotionally positive, and mentally prepared for childbirth.
Conclusion
This case study demonstrates how prenatal yoga can support a woman physically, mentally, and emotionally during pregnancy when practiced in a gradual and structured manner.
The combination of:
breathing practices,
relaxation techniques,
visualisation,
stability-building asanas,
strengthening practices,
and space-creating restorative postures
helped the mother experience greater comfort, confidence, and emotional connection throughout her pregnancy.
The case study also highlights the importance of the father’s involvement during pregnancy. The husband’s participation during weekly sessions provided emotional support to the mother and helped him develop a deeper bond with the unborn child. Prenatal yoga, therefore, becomes not only a practice for maternal wellness but also a holistic approach that nurtures the entire family.
