Case Study – Yoga for PCOS, Adenomyosis and Enlarged Uterus

A 32-year-old woman joined my yoga class in May 2025 with multiple gynecological concerns including PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), adenomyosis, and an enlarged uterus. She was experiencing highly irregular menstrual cycles and depended on medication to induce her periods. Along with medical treatment, her doctor advised her to begin regular yoga practice to support her overall reproductive health and reduce stress levels.

At the beginning of her journey, the focus was on creating a gentle yet consistent yoga routine that could improve hormonal balance, circulation, flexibility, strength, and emotional well-being. The sessions included pranayama, meditation, relaxation techniques, and a gradual progression of asanas.

The yoga practices included:

Balancing Asanas such as Vrikshasana (Tree Pose) to improve concentration, stability, and mind-body coordination.

Forward Bending Asanas like Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend) to calm the nervous system and relax the pelvic region.

Backward Bending Asanas such as Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) and Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose) to stimulate abdominal and pelvic organs.

Hip Opening and Leg Strengthening Practices including Baddha Konasana (Butterfly Pose), Malasana (Garland Pose), and Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose) to improve blood circulation and pelvic flexibility.

Core and Mobility Practices helped improve posture, body awareness, and physical endurance.

Special emphasis was given to pranayama and meditation, as stress management was considered an important part of her healing process. Practices such as Anulom Vilom, Bhramari Pranayama, deep breathing, guided relaxation, and meditation helped her achieve mental calmness, emotional balance, and better hormonal regulation.

After two months of regular yoga practice, she experienced her menstrual cycle naturally without the help of medication. Encouraged by the improvement, she continued her yoga sessions consistently. After four months, during her medical follow-up, her doctor informed her that her PCOS symptoms, adenomyosis condition, and enlarged uterus had significantly improved.

Along with the medical improvements, she also experienced:

Better flexibility and mobility

Increased physical strength and stability

Improved focus and concentration

Reduced stress and anxiety

Greater emotional balance and overall well-being

Conclusion

This case study highlights the significant role yoga along with proper medical treatment can play in supporting women’s reproductive health when practiced regularly under proper guidance. A holistic combination of asanas, pranayama, meditation, and relaxation techniques can help reduce stress, improve hormonal balance, enhance circulation, and promote both physical and emotional healing. While medical supervision remains important, yoga can serve as a powerful complementary therapy for conditions such as PCOS, adenomyosis, and menstrual irregularities, ultimately improving overall quality of life.
